Meeting Purpose
WE1S is calling this meeting of its Advisory Board at UCSB—the only face-to-face meeting of the Board during the project—to seek guidance from experts on the project’s social and technical goals. For this meeting, these goals are organized for convenience under the heading of four themes: Corpus and Collection, Diverse Populations, Methods and Platform, and Imagined Outputs.
The meeting is timed for WE1S’s first year, before substantial results have been achieved, to gain the most advantage from early advice. The meeting is also timed as the capstone event of WE1S’s first summer research camp, and will allow the student and other participants in the camps at UCSB and CSUN to consult with Board members.

“Key Questions” Plenary session Lightning talks (60 minutes). Four talks on the meeting themes by WE1S summer research camp teams on:
Each talk narrates recent project work, identifies key directions and issues, and finishes by posing a specific, high-value key question for the Board’s advice (four questions total). Each such question is short, concrete, and has a practical implication for the project; but each is also chosen because it sits at the crux of larger conceptual or social issues. (Slides for talks) (1) “What are some other ways that we can collect and organize/group our corpus that will enable us to make sense of our data in the most revelatory ways?”
(2) “How can we meaningfully research and represent ‘diverse populations’ in the WE1S corpus while minimizing as many biases as possible, and how do we balance our attention to diversity between global and domestic populations?”
(3) “How do we as humanities scholars interpret topic models for a general humanistic audience?”
(4) “What outputs is WE1S uniquely placed to create and deliver?”

Travel & Lodging
SBA Airport
Most Advisory Board members are arriving via the Santa Barbara airport (SBA), which is located just a mile from the UCSB campus. Please take a rideshare (Lyft/Uber) or taxi to the UCSB Faculty Club & Guest House. When you exit the airport, the rideshare and taxi queues are across the street at the median strip (rideshare to the right of the crosswalk, and taxis to the left. (Ask your rideshare apps or taxi driver for “UCSB Faculty Club”, which they will recognize. Unfortunately, the Faculty Club has no street address on campus that you can ask for. If you have difficulty finding the Club and Guesthouse, call them at 805-893-7000.)
Santa Barbara Airbus from LAX
A few of you are coming up from LAX by means of the Santa Barbara Airbus shuttle. (It’s a good idea to book in advance if possible.) The Airbus is a large bus (photo here) that picks up from each of the terminals at LAX. When you exit a terminal, locate the green sign on the media strip for “Flyaway, Buses, Long Distance Vans” (see image) The scheduled departure time from LAX is approximately when the bus arrives at terminal 1, after which it takes about 20 minutes for it to complete the LAX loop, picking up at each terminal in turn. Important: note that the destination for which to buy a ticket is the shuttle’s Goleta stop (one stop beyond the Santa Barbara stop). Though UCSB is technically in Santa Barbara, it is physically located in Goleta.
When you arrive at the Airbus’s Goleta depot, please take rideshare or a taxi to the UCSB Faculty Club & Guest House. (Ask your rideshare apps or taxi driver for “UCSB Faculty Club”, which they will recognize. Unfortunately, the Faculty Club has no street address on campus that you can ask for. If you have difficulty finding the Club and Guesthouse, call them at 805-893-7000.
UCSB Faculty Club & Guest House
The Faculty Club & Guest House is located on the UCSB campus near the campus lagoon. (campus map | room amenities) Breakfast is provided as part of lodging (M-F: 6:30-9 am; Sat.-Sun.: 7-9 am). It is about a 12-15 minute walk from the Guest House to the Advisory Board meeting location in Davidson Library, Room 1312. (See slide show for Faculty Club & Guest House directions, maps, and photos of the walking route to the Library.)
Entertainment
UCSB is about 11 miles “north” (actually, due west) on highway 101 from downtown Santa Barbara. During the Advisory Board meeting, Santa Barbara will be in festival mode for its “Old Spanish Days” Fiesta, a tradition since 1924. On Friday of the meeting, we are arranging for a van and car-pooling to take interested visitors downtown at 4:30 pm so that they can see some of downtown Santa Barbara, which will be crowded because of Fiesta. Here is a description and map of selected Santa Barbara Attractions & Events on Friday, August 3, 2018.
Reimbursements
For reimbursements of travel and travel-related expenses, please keep receipts. We will need your e-tickets or equivalent, and original receipts for other expenses (except for rideshare receipts, which of course are emails). During the event, we will provide you with reimbursement forms.
