TY - CHAP TI - Diversifying the Liberal Arts Curriculum in an Asian Context AU - Bailyn, Charles T2 - Diversity and Inclusion in Global Higher Education: Lessons from Across Asia AB - The liberal arts curriculum has traditionally been divided into two components: breadth and depth. Approaches to curricular breadth take many forms, one of them being a “core” curriculum of classes that all students take. In the United States, such core curricula have traditionally focused on a so-called canon of “Great Books” dating back to Western antiquity. This model has been fiercely challenged recently as being racist and exclusionary, resulting in significant changes in approach. But these challenges are themselves rooted in the concerns of the west. In this chapter, I will discuss the experience of creating a core curriculum at Yale-NUS College in Singapore as an example of the possibilities of an Asian-oriented core curriculum.
